Intro to Mountaineering

A two day course to introduce hikers and trampers to the New Zealand alpine environment, the equipment needed and the differences between general bush travel and alpine travel. To learn how to safely manage the risks associated with travelling in the New Zealand mountains.

Intermediate Mountaineering

This course revises and extends on Introduction Mountain Skills. Perfect for those who want to take their skills to the next level. Participants must be familiar with the use of ice tools, crampons, self arresting, belaying and abseiling.

  • Revision of anchors, both snow and rock
  • Methods of multiple anchors
  • Assisted hoists and z-pully raises
  • Lowering a slightly injured person
  • Short roping – use of a rope to safeguard insecure person on a moderate terrain
